Of Target, Trump, and Dangerous Lies
When the headlines are "MUSLIM SPIES," "INFESTED," and "TORTURE," it doesn't take a close read to get the picture.
If you haven't called Target Corp yet (or even if you have), go go go!—because:
- Image at right.
- You might get to talk with Kathy in Escalations.
Yesterday I had make another quick Target run. (We have a symbiotic relationship, and they are JEOPARDIZING it.) I scanned the checkout magazine racks with interest, given Target's recent promise that I would "never have to experience [seeing the Enquirer] again." (My 6-year-old speculated that they might appoint a dedicated employee to keep an eye out for me and guide me to an Enquirer-free checkout lane. TARGET ROYALTY.)
Alas. The Enquirer is still there, and this week it's targeting Muslims. (Pun. Intended.)
Calling Again, Which Feels Weird
On the way home, I called corporate again. While the hold music played I thought: I'm a dang fool / It doesn't matter / I'm just one voice / Target's just one retailer / I'M GOING TO LOSE MY WASHI TAPE SUPPLIER / Then again, do I want to support a company profiting from the sale of egregious, harmful lies about already-vulnerable people? / No.
After reporting my frustrations again, I was transferred to the Escalations Department and to Kathy—the gentlest Minnesotan ombuds(wo)man you ever did hear. She listened intently, thanked me for my conscience, and said she'd pass my message to "leadership." And then, when I asked what else could be done, she said: the more people call to complain, and the more often, the sooner change will take place.
YO.
Head back to the original post for more details, phone number, and script. YES, Target is only one Enquirer vendor. But it's a major national retailer, and its pulling the Enquirer would send an important message, ie: Leave the underhanded white supremacist shenanigans to other publications, and return to your journalistic wheelhouse—alien abductions of Kardashians.
GO!
